If you’ve managed to install, update and upgrade the RPI and confirm everything is in order, you can follow these simple steps here. Locate the section
Ubuntu, Raspbian and others Debian derivatives and follow the instructions from there.

Have you confirmed that everything was working fine in HG before you restored your configuration backup.
I obtained 2 RPi 3B+. One of them I set up as a Media Player for a friend, no problem. This Pi I used for a media player until my new HDMI card arrived at which point I began my tussle with HomeGarden. Thank you for your speedy reply and I will try this out tomorrow morning. I have had a big enough day already. Thanks again
You should have no problems installing on a RPI3+ using my original install instructions or the link I just posted above.
As I mentioned above make sure you’re fully updated after installing the OS (Raspbian) and verify that it’s working and after installing HG make sure it’s working too BEFORE you restore your HG backup. That way a problem can be narrowed down along the way a lot easier. It shouldn’t matter but remember you’re restoring a HG config backed up from a Windows install onto a Linux based HG install.
Also SD cards do fail so bear that in mind too.
Hi again
This time
Fresh card, fresh install. Downloaded recommended file and got “cannot get exclusive lock on packaging backend”. Ran update and upgrade without results. This has happened before on other tries. Any suggestions?
Dave
Out of the three steps I outlined where did the install fail.
-
Install Raspbian OS and run update and upgrade. Test that it’s working.
-
Install HG and test to see all is working
-
Restore HG back up configuration and test.

The OS is running nicely. The install I did this morning of Raspberry Pi is running well and has installed several other packages that are running nicely. Both wired and wireless internet are working. I installed Synaptics Package manager without issue. When I try to install HG I get a “failed to install HomeGenie. Could not get an exclusive lock on the packaging backend”. I have checked online and tested various repairs without results. This is frustrating but Homegenie is still running on my Win 10 desktop, I am about to shutdown for the night, but will try again tomorrow. Thanks again for your assistance
There’s some work going on with HG by the author which may account for you not being able to lock on to the HG package.
I’m assuming you are installing HG from a Terminal session on your Raspberry Pi. To be honest you’d be better off opening a PuTTY session between your Windows machine and your Raspberry Pi and following my original instructions. I’ll guarantee you they work.
When you are ready to start again send me a PM and I’ll walk you through the process.
Good morning, Peter
I know I am a total noob at this. I keep thinking because I used to develop applications for income I should have what I need. Then I remember I did that in the late 1980’s With DOS 3.3, transitioned to DOS 5.0 then Windows 3.1. The landscape has changed much since then.
My Pi seems to be functioning all right,Putty is working Tried the download link and got back
“no such file or directory” Pi is connected to internet through a CGNS Hitron cable router with a 50 meg connection.
The Pi shows up on Wireless Network Wizard but has not been setup as part of my home network and cannot share files with my tower or laptops.
If I download the install files to the Pi I get “cannot get exclusive lock on packaging backend” when I click install.
Searches on the Pi are working
Thanks again for your help
Could you copy/paste to here the full command you say is not working
here it is

Ok.
Assuming everything is ok with the Raspberry Pi and the OS is installed and functioning correctly with Raspbian Buster copy/paste the following commands EXACTLY as I have them here in your PuTTY session. Youve got some commands here that have three or four lines but are just one command.Make sure you copy/paste them as one single command exactly as I have provided them
cd
sudo apt install apt-transport-https dirmngr gnupg ca-certificates
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 3FA7E0328081BFF6A14DA29AA6A19B38D3D831EF
echo “deb https://download.mono-project.com/repo/debian stable-raspbianbuster main” | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mono-official-stable.list
sudo apt update
wget https://github.com/genielabs/HomeGenie/releases/download/v1.3-stable.19/homegenie_1.3-stable.19_all.deb
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gdebi-core
sudo gdebi homegenie_1.3-stable.19_all.deb
Could you message me back on your progress
what i entered
echo “deb https://download.mono-project.com/repo/debian stable-raspbianbuster main” | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mono-official-stable.list
E: Type ‘“deb’ is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mono-official-stable.list

this was the reply
this is what has been happening
Were you using a screen/keyboard/mouse attached to your Raspberry Pi
This was entered by cut/paste on my main computer in putty session
Ok what I’m trying to determine if you have the Desktop version or the Lite (Server) version of the OS installed. How did you originally set up the Raspberry Pi
This was full setup with usb stick keyboard/mouse/screen
What instructions did you follow to install and setup the OS
I tried several, last one was from here.
originally plugged in to modem, then setup wireless after. Equal frustration with both
